Types of Detox

Detoxification has become a trend in this day and age, and it is for a good reason. We live in a time of immense pollution. The food we eat has quite a few chemicals.

And to add to that our generation loves processed and junk food. The collective lifestyle of today’s generation has become toxic to an extent. And so, to survive and thrive, we need to detox.

A body that is full of toxins is at a higher risk of diseases and disorders. And that is why we need to detox. However, how do you know where to start? And which kind of detox is best for your body, mind and soul?

Here are 5 most effective types of detox you can choose from:

Lemon water detox

There are various ways to do the lemon water detox. An easy way to add lemon water to your detox routine is to drink warm lemon water when you wake up in the morning.

Lemon has many benefits, and one of them is that it helps to remove toxins from the body.

During sleep at night, the body goes through various processes. One of them is digestion. While digestion is taking place, the body releases toxins into the digestive tract.

Drinking warm lemon water in the morning flushes these toxins out of the body. Lemon water is also effective detoxification water for weightless.

Another way to do a lemon water detox is just to drink normal lemon water for the whole day. You can resume eating lighter soups the next day. This will help flush even more toxins.

You can also do a three day or 5-day lemon water detox. But it is important not to do long lemon water cleanse in the first or second time. You need to take time and start small.

Start with a day-long lemon water cleanse and do this for six months every once a week. Then try a two day cleanse and build up gradually. Doing a long cleanse immaturely can be dangerous to health as the body may go into a shock of not receiving food for so long. Slow and steady is the key here.

Fruits and raw vegetable detox

Fruits and raw vegetable detox includes eating only fruits for a day or two days. Some even do longer fruit detoxes and cleanses to cleanse the body on a cellular level.

This detox includes eating fruits and raw vegetables with a little bit of oil or for the best results without oil. Eating only fruits and raw vegetables and eliminating everything else has a profound detoxification effect.

Firstly, fruits and vegetables are extremely high in fiber. Fiber helps clean the cleaning the digestive tract and emptying the colon. If you suffer from constipation, this detox is excellent to help you heal your digestive issues.

However, you need to do longer periods of this detox to see an improvement in digestion. Eating fruits and vegetables for a day and then going back to heavy foods may not bring the results you need.

Secondly, fruits and raw vegetables are lighter to digest and least toxic than every other food out there. So, in a fruit and raw vegetable detox, your body doesn’t have to invest much energy in digesting heavy foods and can use that energy in throwing out old stored toxins.

This is one of the best and most effective types of detox in the long run.

Juice detox

A juice detox includes juicing of fruits and vegetables. It excludes all solid foods, including solid fruits and vegetables. In a juice detox, you only drink juices made of fruits and vegetables.

While this type of detox is challenging, especially the longer juice cleanser for more than a day. This is because the body is used to solid foods, and the absence of solid foods can cause hunger pangs and other detox symptoms.

The benefit of juice detox is that the body doesn’t have to waste energy in digesting solid foods while also receiving essential nutrients from the juice. Instead, it can use that energy to eliminate toxins from the body and repair the body on a cellular level.

Attempt longer juice cleanses only when you have built up your strength and capacity by doing shorter one-day juice detoxes over a period of time.

Fasting is an ancient spiritual science that has been spoken about in all spiritual traditions like Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and others.

It is one of the hardest types of detox but also extremely rewarding.

It has not only spiritual benefits but also has many physical, emotional, mental benefits. Research has proven the many benefits of fasting in animals and humans.

When animals fall sick, they fast. Animals also fast when they go in their hibernation mode during winter. Fasting protects animals from developing diseases and healing from illnesses.

Similarly, when humans fast, we experience many benefits on various levels, and one of them is detoxification.

There are three main types of fasting:

Water fasting is when you drink only for a day, two days or even more. Dry fasting is when we do not drink water, nor do we come in contact with water to brush our teeth and even shower.

Intermittent fasting is when you eat only one meal a day or eating only during a certain time period. For example, your eating time can be from 1 pm to 5 pm. After 5 pm you do not eat anything until 1 pm the next day.

All energy that goes into digesting food goes into detoxification and healing of the body during fasting.

Ayurvedic detox

There are many types of detox in Ayurveda. One of the most common types of ayurvedic detox is Panchakarma.

‘Pancha’ means five, and ‘karma’ means actions or process. Panchakarma involves five main processes of cleansing and detoxifying the body.

The five processes are:

  • Vamana meaning emesis
  • Virechana meaning laxation or purgation
  • Vasti meaning enema
  • Nasya meaning administration of ayurvedic/natural drugs through the nose
  • Rakta mokshana meaning bloodletting

All of these five processes involve cleansing the body from head to toe. Scientific research suggests that Panchakarma has a positive effect on people who go through the cleansing and detox processes.

One important thing to keep in mind while trying various types of detox is that it takes time and lots of patience. You are detoxing many years of toxins stored in your body. It will not happen overnight.

It takes 2-3 years and even more to detox on deeper levels. Detoxification is not just about cleansing physical toxins but also letting go of toxic behaviours, thought patterns and ways of being.

Detoxification, when done properly, also causes long-lasting lifestyle changes.

And so, detoxification is not just a physical process but an emotional, mental and spiritual one. So take your time, try out different kinds of detox and see which one suits you the best.

It is a process of trial and error and one of learning as you go. It will take time for you to figure out which type of detox and fast works best for you.

Most of all, take it easy. Don’t push your body too much as that may cause more harm than good. As you prepare your body to detox on deeper levels with shorter cleanses and fasts, your body will automatically go into detox mode without you trying to push yourself too hard.

Slow and steady is the best way to go when it comes to detox and fasting.
